My Top 10 Best/Worst Songs of 2023

Well, better late than never. Let's take a look at my favorite and least favorite songs of 2023. And spoiler alert, one artist appears in both my best and worst list. Let's get started with my top 10 worst songs.

My Top 10 Worst Songs

10: Olivia Rodrigo - vampire

She's called Olivia Midrigo for a reason. Her whiny voice and the horrible production make this a terrible song.

9: SZA - Snooze

The song that refused to snooze off the countdown. This is so incredibly boring and stuck around way too long.

8: Dominic Fike - Mama's Boy

Um, what the actual heck is this song? Dominic sounds very weird and the production is trash and super weird.

7: Lewis Capaldi - Wish You The Best

The production is super boring and Lewis sounds like a broken pencil sharpener.

6: Toosii - Favorite Song

Least favorite song would have been a more fitting title for this abomination.

5: JVKE - golden hour

This was way too weird and stuck around way too long.

4: JVKE - this is what heartbreak feels like

If you listen closely, you can hear JVKE screaming. That's right, S.C.R.E.A.M.I.N.G!!!

3: Ed Sheeran - Eyes Closed

This song was so annoying, every time I turned on Hits 1 I could not escape this song.

2: Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For?

This was insanely boring. The production was non-existence and Billie sounded terrible

You already know what my #1 worst song is...

1: Amelia Moore/jxdn - FUMD

Where do I even begin with this trainwreck of a song. The production is terrible and super ear-rapey. And Amelia and jxdn both have a really bad filters on their voices. Easily one of the worst songs I have ever heard in my life, if not the worst. Good riddance to Hits 1 for putting this in hitbound.

Let's take a look at my top 10 songs

My Top 10 Best Songs

10: Olivia Rodrigo - bad idea right?

Well, would you look at that? Olivia had one of my worst songs of the year and one of my favorite. Olivia is really hit or miss. She either has amazing songs like drivers license, good 4 u, and this one. Or she makes terrible ones like deja vu, traitor, and vampire. As for bad idea right, this is such a banger. The pop punk production is amazing and super catchy and Olivia sounds great.

9: K.Flay - It's Been So Long

I've actually known about K.Flay for a while now, since 2016 when she released the banger Blood In The Cut. So I was happy when Hits 1 picked up on It's Been So Long and made her a one-to-watch. The production on this song is super cool. It's like a rap pop dance alt song, and the blending of all those genres actually works really well.

8: Joji - Die For You

I hated Glimpse of Us when it came out and I hated this song too when it entered hitbound. It spent 10 weeks as my orange hitbound song. Then something finally clicked and I realized how amazing this song was. The production is a bit slow but it's still super cool and catchy and Joji sounds great.

7: Patrick Martin - Dandelion Eyes

This took several weeks in hitbound to grow on me. And it grew on me hard. The production is insanely catchy and Patrick sounds amazing. Apparently this randomly re-entered hitbound 6 months later but unfortunately it never debuted 😢

6: Knox - Not The 1975

I accidently discovered this song like 3 months before Hits 1 did. It actually spent a couple weeks at #1 before it ever entered hitbound. So I was very happy when Hits 1 picked up on this and it entered the countdown. The production is super fun and I love the references to various The 1975 songs.

5: Fall Out Boy - Love From The Other Side

Fall Out Boy's big comeback song after 3 years. And they did not disappoint. The production is amazing and Patrick Stump sounds great as always.

4: Crash Adams - Give Me a Kiss

It's really neat that Hits 1 picks up on these random artists that aren't popular, otherwise I never would have discovered how amazing Crash Adams is. Give Me a Kiss is super fun and I'm glad this was able to reach #1 on the countdown.

3: P!nk - Never Gonna Not Dance Again

Ah yes, everyone's favorite soccer mom song. But soccer mom songs can be amazing sometimes. The production is super fun and catchy and P!nk sounds amazing as always.

2: Post Malone - Chemical

This is just insanely catchy and Post sounds great.

And my favorite song of 2023 is...

1: Fall Out Boy - What a Time To Be Alive

Yet another banger from Fall Out Boy. The production is simply incredible and Patrick Stump sounds amazing. It's a shame that this never became a hit.

That's all for now, see you all next time!

Kenya Grace - It's not fair

Haiden Henderson - hell of a good time

Teddy Swims - The Door

The Beaches - Blame Brett

Olivia Rodrigo just released the deluxe version of GUTS, and she's here with obsessed. Yes, this is finally another Olivia banger I've been waiting for. The pop punk production is amazing and insanely catchy and Olivia sounds great.

Benson Boone brings us another song with Slow It Down. This is basically Beautiful Things 2.0. The production starts off slow and slowly turns into a rock song by the end. The production here is really cool and Benson sounds great.

Alt rock band Wallows make their Hits 1 debut with Calling After Me. This is just pretty good. The production is alright but kinda forgettable.

Everyone's favorite👦sounding singer is here with King Size Bed. The production is super catchy and Alec sounds great.

EDM artist Porter Robinson is here with Cheerleader. The production gets kinda ear-rapey in some parts but overall this is pretty good.

Clarity randomly grew on me a lot.

Exits:

  • Charli XCX - Von dutch
  • LAY/LAUV - Run Back To You
  • Pharrell Williams/Miley Cyrus - Doctor (Work It Out)

Von dutch was very weird and sounded too much like a dying vacuum cleaner. Run Back To You and Doctor were great but kinda forgettable.

Abyss

Jessie Murph/Jelly Roll - Wild Ones

Victoria Monét - On My Mama

UMI/V - wherever u r

Nicki Minaj/Lil Uzi Vert - Everybody

Hayes Warner/Billy B/Kevin Rudolf - Just A Girl

Dasha - Austin

MAX/HUH YUNJIN - STUPID IN LOVE

Jelly Roll/Lainey Wilson - Save Me

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily-Rose Depp - One Of The Girls

Panic! At The Disco - New Perspective

Shinedown - A Symptom of Being Human

Jennifer Lopez/Latto - Can't Get Enough

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor

King Size Blurbs:

We lost Standing Next to You and get him back. Good riddance to annoy him back, one of the most annoying songs this year. And RIP to Standing Next to You, one of my favorite songs of the year. With it gone, Training Season now becomes my favorite song on the countdown.

I'm not sure if Hits 1 switched to the original version of yes, and since that's what they played on the countdown, so I'll change it for now. I'm not sure why this song is still so high since it only had 19 spins last week and we can't be friends seems to be taking over.

Beautiful Things jumped up to #3? That's unexpected, but I'll gladly take it.

Welp, Feather now holds the blocked from #1 record with now 8 weeks being blocked from #1, beating Cold Heart's 7 weeks.

Can we please get a new #1 song? It's kinda ridiculous that Houdini has been #1 for 8 weeks in a row now, and I'm running out of ideas to generate AI pictures of Dua Lipa dressed as Houdini for my post thumbnails.

That's all for now, see you all next week!

Dua Lipa (7) - Week of Mar 16, 2024

Houdini

Hey guys, what's up? Just one quick announcement. The 2013 ultimate rank is finally done, check it out here: https://zestpond.blogspot.com/p/2013-ultimate-rank-unfinished.html. I don't know if I'm gonna do any more ultimate ranks, but I might go back to doing them if I get more time.

Before we get to this week's fresh 30, let's say goodbye to the songs leaving the countdown:

Jessie Murph/Jelly Roll - Wild Ones (#25) 11 weeks, peak: 25

Victoria Monét - On My Mama (#23) 4 weeks, peak: 23

Doja Cat - Agora Hills (#9) 20 weeks, peak: 9

Last week's #1: Dua Lipa - Houdini (6 weeks at #1)

30. Twenty One Pilots - Overcompensate (Debut)

29. Ariana Grande - we can't be friends (wait for your love) (Debut)

28. Djo - End of Beginning (Debut)

27. Madison Beer - Make You Mine (+2)

26. Usher - Kissing Strangers (+4)

25. girl in red - Too Much (+3)

24. SZA - Saturn (+3)

23. Selena Gomez - Love On (-1)

22. Beyoncé - TEXAS HOLD 'EM (-2)

21. Tate McRae - greedy (-3) (11 weeks at #1)

20. Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me (-4)

19. Teddy Swims - Lose Control (+2)

18. Tyla - Water (-3)

17. Knox - Me, Myself & Your Eyes (=)

16. Jung Kook - Standing Next to You (+8)

15. Henry Moodie - pick up the phone (+4)

14. Dua Lipa - Training Season (+12)

13. Justin Timberlake - Selfish (+1)

12. Noah Kahan - Stick Season (-2)

11. Reneé Rapp/Megan Thee Stallion - Not My Fault (+2)

10. AJR - Yes I'm A Mess (-2)

9. Ariana Grande/Mariah Carey - yes, and? (+2)

8. Olivia Rodrigo - get him back! (-1) (4 weeks at #1)

7. Benson Boone - Beautiful Things (+5)

6. Kenya Grace - Strangers (=)

5. Knox - Not The 1975 (=)

4. Taylor Swift - Is It Over Now? (-1)

3. Tate McRae - exes (+1)

2. Sabrina Carpenter - Feather (=)

1. Dua Lipa - Houdini (=) (7 weeks at #1)

Debuts:

Twenty One Pilots are back on the countdown for the first time in 3 years with Overcompensate, after The Outside left in late 2021. I'm still not completely sold on Overcompensate. The production is cool but kinda weird but Tyler Joseph's voice is amazing as always.

Ariana Grande brings her second song on the countdown with we can't be friends. This is a fun little bop and Ariana sounds great, but this is kinda forgettable and isn't nearly as good as yes, and.

Djo, or actor Joe Keery from Stranger Things, is here with End of Beginning. This has grown on me slightly after hearing it a couple times on Hits 1 last week. The production is strange but kinda catchy and Djo sounds alright.

Countdown Extra: Luke Hemmings - Shakes

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Dua Lipa - Training Season (+12)

Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week: Jack Harlow - Lovin On Me (-4)

Last year's #1 song: Miley Cyrus - Flowers (6/6 weeks at #1)

Favorite song last year: Zara Larsson - Can't Tame Her

Least favorite song last year: JVKE - this is what heartbreak feels like

Most missed song: Anitta/DaBaby - Girl From Rio (2021)

Recommendation for Hits 1: JORDY - SECOND MINUTE HOUR

Hitbound:

Alex Warren - Before You Leave Me (re-entry)

Meghan Trainor/T-Pain - Been Like This (Debut)

24KGoldn - Clarity

Nicky Youre - Part Time Lover (Debut)

ZAYN - What I Am (Debut)

Charli XCX - Von dutch

Luke Hemmings - Shakes

The Beaches - Blame Brett

Teddy Swims - The Door

Liam Payne - Teardrops

LAY/LAUV - Run Back To You

Jagwar Twin - Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)

Kenya Grace - It's not fair (Debut)

Fall Out Boy - So Much (for) Stardust

Pharrell Williams/Miley Cyrus - Doctor (Work It Out)

Haiden Henderson - hell of a good time (Debut)

Before You Leave Me re-entered. I never reviewed this song so I'll do that now. Alex Warren's voice is amazing and the production is pretty catchy but it's just kinda forgettable.

Meghan Trainor teams up with T-Pain, who makes his return to Hits 1 after 12 years when It's Not You (It's Me) dropped out of hitbound in 2012, with Been Like This. This is super fun and Meghan and T-Pain both sound great.

Nicky Youre is back with Part Time Lover after that super boring S.A.D song dropped out of hitbound a few weeks ago. Part Time Lover is better than S.A.D, but it's still not that great. It's upbeat enough, but it's super forgettable.

Zayn is back with What I Am after that good but super forgettable song Love Like This spent 1 week on the countdown last year. This isn't that great. This is super boring and Zayn doesn't sound that good.

Kenya Grace is back with It's not fair. Kenya sounds great but the production is kinda forgettable and isn't nearly as good as Strangers.

We have some rando named Haiden Henderson with hell of a good time. I can't find out any information about this guy, he doesn't even have an artist description on Spotify. I don't know how Hits 1 even finds some of these songs. But I'm glad they did, because this song goes so hard. This song reminds me a lot of Fallin' by Why Don't We, which was one of my favorite songs of 2020. The production is super cool and catchy and Haiden sounds great.

Exits:

Hayes Warner/Billy B/Kevin Rudolf - Just A Girl

Dasha - Austin

Galantis/David Guetta/5 Seconds of Summer - Lighter

Lighter was amazing and deserved better. Just A Girl and Austin find themselves in the abyss. Austin has grown on me a lot after hearing it a few times on Hits 1 last week.

Abyss:

UMI/V - wherever u r

Nicki Minaj/Lil Uzi Vert - Everybody

Hayes Warner/Billy B/Kevin Rudolf - Just A Girl

Dasha - Austin

MAX/HUH YUNJIN - STUPID IN LOVE

Jelly Roll/Lainey Wilson - Save Me

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily-Rose Depp - One Of The Girls

Panic! At The Disco - New Perspective

Shinedown - A Symptom of Being Human

Jennifer Lopez/Latto - Can't Get Enough

FLETCHER - Lead Me On

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor

Part Time Blurber:

We lost On My Mama, Wild Ones, and Agora Hills. Good riddance to Agora Hills/Need to Know part 2, one of my worst songs this year, maybe even the worst song. On My Mama was a fun little bop and deserved better. And Wild Ones was good but stuck around way too long to only peak at #25.

Lovin On Me has been dropping in airplay and on the countdown, hopefully this mediocre rap leaves soon.

Lose Control jumped 2 spots despite being the second to last least played countdown song.

Nice to see Standing Next to You getting a big +8 jump and Beautiful Things in the top 10.

Is annoy him back ever gonna leave? It's the least played countdown song and it's still #8. But I have a feeling it will probably leave next week.

Feather has been blocked from #1 for 7 weeks in a row, which ties the record set by Cold Heart in 2021 when it was blocked from #1 for 7 weeks by Stay and Shivers.

That's all for now, see you all next week!

Dua Lipa (6) - Week of Mar 9, 2024

Hey guys, what's up? I've re-enabled comments so comment to your heart's content and I'll try to respond to them as soon as I can. I've also changed the color of "good" songs from dark blue to light blue because the dark blue was very hard to read. This was a very active week. There were 5 exits and a ton of big drops and rises.

Before we get to this week's fresh 30, let's say goodbye to the songs leaving the countdown:

Nicki Minaj/Lil Uzi Vert - Everybody (#28)

UMI/V - wherever u r (#27)

Paul Russell - Say Cheese (#26)

Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday Girls (#21)

Thirty Seconds to Mars - Seasons (#17)

Last week's #1: Dua Lipa - Houdini (5 weeks at #1)

30. Usher - Kissing Strangers (Debut)

29. Madison Beer - Make You Mine (Debut)

28. girl in red - Too Much (Debut)

27. SZA - Saturn (Debut)

26. Dua Lipa - Training Season (-2)

25. Jessie Murph/Jelly Roll - Wild Ones (=)

24. Jung Kook - Standing Next to You (-2)

Debuts:

Making its way out of the abyss is Usher with Kissing Strangers. Usher sounds good but this is kinda forgettable, and the song with the same name by DNCE and Nicki Minaj is a lot better.

Madison Beer is back on Hits 1 with Make You Mine after Reckless dropped out of hitbound in 2021. The EDM production is good and Madison sounds good but this is kinda forgettable.

Great, just what we need, more Snooza. SZA is back with Saturn. This isn't that great. It's just another weird and boring SZA song.

Girl in red makes her countdown debut with Too Much after that weird Serotonin song dropped out of hitbound in 2021. This is really fun and girl in red sounds great.

Beyoncé is back, this time with a country song TEXAS HOLD 'EM. This is a fun little country song and Beyoncé sounds good.

Countdown Extra: The Beaches - Blame Brett

Biggest Jump Of The Week: Knox - Me, Myself & Your Eyes (+13)

Biggest DRRRRRRROP!!! Of The Week: Teddy Swims - Lose Control (-12)

Last year's #1 song: Miley Cyrus - Flowers (5/6 weeks at #1)

Favorite song last year: Patrick Martin - Dandelion Eyes

Least favorite song last year: JVKE - this is what heartbreak feels like

Most missed song: Kevin Rudolf/Lil Wayne - Let It Rock (2008)

Recommendation for Hits 1: Havana Brown - Forever Young

Hitbound:

Fall Out Boy - So Much (for) Stardust

Ariana Grande - we can’t be friends (wait for your love) (Debut)

Teddy Swims - The Door

Hayes Warner/Billy B/Kevin Rudolf - Just A Girl (Debut)

Luke Hemmings - Shakes (Debut)

Pharrell Williams/Miley Cyrus - Doctor (Work It Out)

Dasha - Austin (Debut)

Djo - End of Beginning (Debut)

24KGoldn - Clarity (re-entry)

LAY/LAUV - Run Back To You

Charli XCX - Von dutch (Debut)

Twenty One Pilots - Overcompensate

Liam Payne - Teardrops

Galantis/David Guetta/5 Seconds of Summer - Lighter

The Beaches - Blame Brett

Jagwar Twin - Bad Feeling (Oompa Loompa)

Ariana Grande just released her new album eternal sunshine and she's here with we can’t be friends. Ariana sounds great and the production is pretty cool.

Hayes Warner teams up with Billy B and Kevin Rudolf for a remake of No Doubt's 1995 hit Just A Girl. I love the original Just A Girl and this one is great too. Hayes Warner and Billy B sound great and the guitar from Kevin Rudolf is amazing.

Luke Hemmings from 5 Seconds of Summer is here with Shakes. The production is alright but kinda boring but Luke sounds great as always.

We have 2 randos debuting hitbound this week. Country singer Dasha is here with Austin. The production is pretty fun and Dasha sounds pretty good.

Djo, whose real name is Joe Keery who is an actor on Stranger Things, is here with End of Beginning. This is very weird and Djo doesn't sound that great.

Clarity re-entered for some reason. This is pretty fun and 24KGoldn sounds good.

Charli XCX is back with Von dutch. This song is very weird but it kinda slaps.

Overcompensate has grown on me slightly.

Exits:

Alec Benjamin - Pick Me

Surfaces/JVKE - Don't Let Me Down

Jessie Murph - Son of a Bitch

Alex Warren - Before You Leave Me

Crash Adams - Good Side

Willow Avalon - Honey Ain't No Sweeter

Nicky Youre - S.A.D.

None of these were really that great and won't be missed.

Abyss:

MAX/HUH YUNJIN - STUPID IN LOVE

Jelly Roll/Lainey Wilson - Save Me

Morgan Wallen - Thinkin' Bout Me

The Weeknd/JENNIE/Lily-Rose Depp - One Of The Girls

Panic! At The Disco - New Perspective

Shinedown - A Symptom of Being Human

Jennifer Lopez/Latto - Can't Get Enough

FLETCHER - Lead Me On

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder on the Dancefloor

Texas Blurb 'Em:

We lost Everybody, wherever u r, Say Cheese, Pink Friday Girls, and Seasons. Everybody and Pink Friday Girls were really fun and deserved better. wherever u r was extremely boring and did not deserve to become a hit. Say Cheese was fun but was kinda forgettable. And Seasons was super forgettable and lasted way too long.

Agora Hills and Lovin On Me need to do more leaving the countdown and less jumping.

This is ridiculous, Wild Ones has been here for 11 weeks and has never gotten higher than #25. Either do something or leave the countdown.

yes, and? has faded on me slightly.

It looks like Lose Control is finally on its way out. It's a good song but I don't think it deserved to be here for 26 weeks.

How much longer is Feather gonna be blocked from #1?

Houdini is #1 for a 6th week in a row. This is a good song but I'd like to see something else at #1 like Not The 1975 or even Feather, but anything but Is It Over Now.

That's all for now, see you all next week!
